Space Junk is Forever is a Boston-based instrumental prog rock band driven by vintage keyboards. Philly native David Palan is the group's newest member playing 5 string bass and joining Jordan Holt on Hammond organ/Clavinet D6/Mellotron (Clone)/Mini-Moog, Claude Garoute on Rhodes piano/vintage synths/tambourine, and Madden Klass on drums. SJF delivers short but simultaneously dense and catchy songs that emphasize melody at every moment- simple melodies that weave together unusual harmonies, frequent key changes, and fluctuating meters. Surprisingly accessible, the aptly and humoristically titled songs evoke cinematic imagery reminiscent 1980s John Williams movie themes and 19th century late romanticism and early impressionism. Music theory nerds, 70s prog lovers, and synthesizer geeks are all sure to enjoy the sounds of these classic (and heavy) instruments, most of them far older than the band members themselves who lovingly lug them around.
Blossoming from the Slavic heart of Greater Boston, the Somerville Symphony Orkestar is an all-original instrumental band that plays what they call “International Party Music.” Formed in 2009, the SSO combines elements of Balkan music with Rock, Reggae, and Funk music to create a high energy dance party. New and yet familiar is constant theme among concert goers as their music combines these elements in a fresh and exciting way, but provides beautiful and lyrical melodies. Described by WBUR as “Somerville’s Best Party Band” the SSO has consistently won over every room and brings everyone in for a great enjoyable show.
With the success of their first album, the SSO has opened for Moon Hooch, the Rebirth Brass Band, the Stepkids, and Dudu Tassa & the Kuwaitis. They’ve also performed at many of New England’s other festivals including Jerry Jam, Boston’s First Night, and the Somerville Artbeat Festival.
